At Corpus Christi we value Art as an important part of our children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum.  We expose and engage our children in all of the creative arts spanning art history, disciplines and genres all of which contribute and expand the cultural capital of our school. Our children learn about the significance of art masters, can recall famous pieces and we combine this with lots of exposure to current unrecognised artists work within the contemporary art world. A structured approach to learning skills, knowledge and vocabulary, enables pupils to ‘build upon’ their previous learning and show clear skills progression. As pupils progress, we encourage critical thinking and discussion, and a deeper understanding of art to equip them with the knowledge and skills to experiment and create their own pieces of work. Children become proficient in the creative process including; opportunities to plan and develop their own artistic ideas and visual aesthetic, sharing their ideas and creative thinking with their peers, art critic debate and time to reflect on their individual practice. 

Our school drivers underpin our Art curriculum. We want our children to:

• Communicate: to develop the language and vocabulary of art to share their ideas, thoughts and subject knowledge, verbally and non verbally, and to express their opinions of artists’ work and their own work.
• Opportunity: to develop the knowledge and skills to provide opportunities for future careers and to enrich their leisure time.
• Responsibility: to develop an understanding of the benefits of art as a form of self expression, relaxation and creativity that can be enjoyed as part of a social group or a future career.
• Perseverance: to keep trying out new designs, skills and techniques to work towards a final piece of art and to learn about artists who have persevered with their work.
• Understanding: to gain an understanding of art and how it ‘speaks’ to each of us in different ways.
• Service: to use their skills in art to serve others and share their work with the community.

Implementation

Within each key stage children use their own experiences and artist research to develop their ideas, knowledge and understanding. All key stages carry out artistic experiments, explore working in different mediums and build upon existing techniques, before producing a creative response or piece. As children develop through the curriculum they become proficient in a multitude of drawing, painting, sculpture and art, craft and design techniques. We put emphasis on our children becoming confident at using language of art and provide lots of opportunity to carry out reflective practice including time to evaluate and analyse their own and each other’s creative works. At the end of each key stage, pupils know how to use and apply artistic research and have embedded a range of skills and processes within each key stage.

Impact 

Each child bestows the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own individual ‘masterpieces’ using a variety medium. Across the school all children are excited to embark on new art projects and look forward to a weekly hour of discrete art within the timetable; as well as any extra time allocated to finish work. Our children know how art both reflects and shapes our history, and contributes to the cultural capital of our nation. Throughout their school journey children develop the skills to reflect and talk confidently. about their own work and work of other artists utilising key concepts, ‘art speak’ and critical thinking.
